Eric Hannay, President

I am proud to be part of a fourth-generation family-owned company and carry on what my great-grandfather, Clifford B. Hannay, envisioned in 1933 – to provide a handcrafted, dependable product with unmatched customer service. THE REEL FACTS:

HISTORY OF HANNAY REELS

1930s

In 1933 Clifford B. Hannay (pictured) was asked by a local kerosene delivery man to build a unit to pump fuel directly from his truck to homes – rather than carrying pails. Word of Clifford’s new reel (inset) spread quickly, requests started to come in and Clifford B. Hannay & Son was born.

1940s

The business continued to grow (production line pictured) as new customers across the U.S. began to hear about Hannay Reels, and the second generation of Hannays – Clifford’s sons Dwight & George (pictured with Clifford) – joined the business to spread the word about the company.

1950s

At the mid-century mark, building reels was becoming big business, with Hannay constructing about 3,600 reels a year. Hannay reels were being showcased across the country.

1960s

Continued success throughout the 1960s, an expanded customer base and growing dealer partnerships led to the third generation of Hannays – George Hannay’s son, Roger (picture lower right) and Dwight Hannay’s son, Robert (pictured upper left) to join the company to carry on the Hannay legacy.

1970s

In this changing decade, new boundaries were forged as exporting became more common and a higher demand for specialty uses and custom requirements were needed. The Hannay product range grew to multiple industries and applications (1970’s Hannay advertisement).

1980s

The 1980s was a prosperous decade for the company and the country - it also highlighted Hannay Reels 50th Anniversary (Hannay employee group shot circa 1983).

1990s

The 1990s brought in the fourth generation of Hannay ownership – Roger Hannay’s son Eric and daughter Elaine joined the family business. A company name change also took place, to Hannay Reels Inc., along with updates in equipment and manufacturing space.

Today

Originally a gas station and luncheonette (picture top) this space became Hannay’s first manufacturing building, and now the site of the Hannay Museum. Today Hannay Reels corporate headquarters, still located in Westerlo, NY spans over 200,000 square feet of manufacturing space. We continue to look toward the future and providing a product our customers can count on.

REELS 101

Our Reels 101 guide will help you better understand reels, including:

WHY DO I NEED A REEL?

A reel is a device that winds up and stores a hose or cable – making your job easier and your workplace safer and more efficient.

INCREASED EFFICIENCY

A reel neatly stores your hose or cable to ensure it’s readily available wherever and whenever it’s needed—no tangles, no leaks, and no problems.

IMPROVED SAFETY

A reel keeps your hose or cable off of the floor to avoid tripping and other workplace accidents that may cause work stoppage or costly insurance issues.

LONGER HOSE AND CABLE LIFE

A reel will lengthen the life of expensive hose and cable. Constant dragging or kinking can damage hose to the point where it becomes un-useable. Shorts in electric cable or leaks in hose can lead to environmental issues and other problems.

WHAT TYPE OF REEL DO I NEED?

The type of reel you need is determined by two factors – what it’s holding (hose or cable) and how it will be used (live or storage).

\"placeholder\"

HOSE REELS VS. CABLE REELS

Start with the hose or cable you’ll be using. The size, length, and type are the primary factors in selecting the proper reel for your job, but the quality of the hose or cable is just as important.

\"placeholder\"

LIVE REELS VS. STORAGE REELS

Live reels connect to your hose or cable, allowing fluid or current to pass through while still on the reel.

Storage reels wind up your hose or cable, but do NOT allow fluid or current to flow while still on the reel. The hose or cable must be taken off the spool of the reel to be connected and used.

HOW DO I SELECT THE RIGHT REEL MODEL?

Once you know what type of reel you need (hose vs. cable, live vs. storage), it’s important to understand the available options and your specific needs to ensure a perfect fit.

REEL OPTIONS

Hannay Reels offers a variety of options:

ORDERING YOUR HOSE OR CABLE REEL

Before placing your order, please consider the following specifications for your cable or hose:

When space permits, select a reel with greater capacity than what is actually needed. This allows you to rewind with less care and keeps the hose or cable well protected, even if it is not wound in uniform coils. In most cases, the larger reel within the same series is the same price.
